How to Talk to Your Kids About Current Events • Parent Influence

With so many different things filling the news these days, and social media being in the hands of most kids it’s difficult for parents to keep up with current events. That’s why it’s even harder for parents to talk to kids about current events because we can barely keep up with everything ourselves.

Today we wanted to share some tips to help you stay up to date with current events so that you can discuss these events with your kids. In order for a civilization to not repeat history, they must know about current and past events.

Talking to your kids and answering their questions about current events will help them be a well-rounded educated part of the world when they grow up.

Subscribe to a News Source

News sources are full of stories that matter to you and your family. When you subscribe to a news source, there is information sent directly to your inbox about current events which will help if you are short on time.

These tips are helpful for all age groups but even more so with older kids ages 8-18 because they’ll be able to understand the nuance of current events more as they mature.

Even parents can benefit from subscribing to a news source because it gives you some background information about the stories that matter, and it helps both children and parents have a discussion later on.

Read Current Events Books

Books related to current events are a great way for kids ages 8-18 to stay up to date on current events. Kids are able to read more complex words and gain a better understanding of topics that are extremely relevant today.

There are books written about many different aspects of the world, current affairs, business, science, games/sports, etc. so there is sure to be something for everyone in your family.

Subscribe To a Podcast

Podcasts are a great way to stay up to date with current events because you can learn about it while doing something else. For example there are podcasts devoted to reading books, cooking recipes, solving logic problems and everything in between.

This is a good option if you have older kids who aren’t as interested in reading the books listed above or you are just looking for something different to do.

Take Them To The News Outlets And Expose Them To Different Things

One of the best ways for kids to learn about current events is to take them out and expose them to different things. If your child likes sports get them tickets to a game, if your child likes science take them to the museum, etc.

Something that might be out of your comfort zone can really help your kid broaden their horizons!

It’s important for kids ages 8-18 to learn about current events because this is what’s happening in the world right now and it will impact them as they grow up.

By taking some time out of your day to listen, learn about, and teach them current events you’re giving them the tools they need for a better future.
